The 2023 NSTF-South32 Ukhozi Award winner, Dr Philemon Mjwara, speaks about his career in the science field to date and what inspired him to pursue a career in STEM. The Monsoon team interviewed him for this video production at the DSTI offices in Pretoria East. This video forms part of a web video series for the NSTF’s Share ’n Dare Programme, aimed at inspiring school learners to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Dr Mjwara currently serves as the Permanent Representative of South Africa at United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). 

His career began as a physics lecturer at the University of Fort Hare and he has since held positions at the former Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, including Director of Technology. He has also served at the University of Pretoria as a professor of science and technology policy, as well as at the University of the Witwatersrand. His work has included the management of technological innovation and involvement in policy formulation processes.

Prior to his appointment as the Director General at the DSTI, Dr Mjwara served as Group Executive: Research and Development and Strategic Human Capital Development at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Ukhozi means eagle in IsiZulu, and the Award references the black eagle in particular, which is indigenous to Southern Africa. 

On the occasion of special anniversaries of the NSTF and the NSTF Awards, the NSTF Executive Committee will decide on recognising someone who has made an outstanding contribution to science, engineering, technology and innovation in South Africa, as well as to the NSTF over many years, with an Ukhozi Award.

Dr Philemon Mjwara received the NSTF Ukhozi Award in 2023.
