Meet Prof Marianne Vanderschuren – Video Production South Africa

Award Winner Interviews – On-Location Video Production South Africa

Meet Transport Engineer, Prof Marianne Vanderschuren, winner of the prestigious NSTF-South32 “Special Annual Theme Award: Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development”. The Monsoon video production team headed to UCT in the Western Cape, to do an interview with her about career options in STEM fields for high school learners. Video production South Africa.

Our team travels across South Africa on assignments for ground video and photography, as well as licensed aerial video/photography. In this video interview, filmed at the University of Cape Town, we speak to her about her love for transport, the future of smart cities, and how women bring that special something to the civil engineering table.

Prof Marianne Vanderschuren – Transport Engineer

Prof Marianne Vanderschuren was born in a small mining town in the south of the Netherlands, called Kerkrade, where the majority of inhabitants were blue-collar workers and unemployment rates during the 1970s raised to 28%, after the closing of the mines. Her late father owned a driving school, and initiated a love for transport from an early age, having long conversations about road use and the issues around transportation systems in the area.

She worked as a researcher in the Netherlands for over 10 years and was appointed at the University of Cape Town in 2000 to develop the teaching of transport studies on an undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Vanderschuren is the 119th President of the distinguished South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE), one of only three women in this position. Read more about her at Women In Science.

Smart Mobility

As an expert in transport planning and engineering, she has been appointed as the research chair of SA’s Smart Mobility initiative. The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of Science and Innovation (DSI), and National Research Foundation (NRF) have jointly established a research chair in smart mobility, billed as the first of its kind in South Africa.

Through the additional research capacity provided by the NRF/CSIR, Prof Vanderschuren aims to harness the opportunities that new technologies provide to the day-to-day transport challenges in South Africa and beyond, thereby improving the lives of current and future generations, the environment and the economy.

“Those who correspond with me know that ‘dare to care’ has been my motto since the start of the pandemic. The late President Nelson Mandela asked all South Africans to dedicate 67 minutes of our time in service to others in need. I challenge all members to do this every month, donating their skills, experience, and wisdom in service of our people. Imagine what difference the collective 200 000 hours could make. So, in conclusion, let’s ‘CARE, REBOOT and REBUILD’ our beautiful nation.”
