AQUALIBRIUM – changing learners’ lives one water competition at a time!

About The Competition

Water distribution systems are important to supply safe and clean drinking water to communities. School teams are tasked to design a model water distribution network to distribute three litres of water equally between three points on the grid using two different diameter pipes and connection pieces. They are then judged on how well they execute the task using a penalty points system. The teams have a period of about one hour in which to plan, design, build and operate their network.

This competition exposes learners to the practical application of processes that influence their daily lives, which is how water gets to their homes. They are made aware of the intricacies involved in the design of water distribution networks and the actual water delivery to households.

The grid used for the water distribution network is on a background that depicts the entire water cycle with all the major impacts affecting this scarce resource. This grid intrigues learners, as well as educators, who find it a very useful educational tool.

The competition creates awareness regarding the issues surrounding water in South Africa. It spreads the message that water is a precious commodity, which should be recycled, re-used, and respected, while the use of water should be reduced.

Through this annual competition, SAICE takes the responsibility of spreading the news that water should always be used wisely, not only now during the serious drought situation; that infrastructure should be maintained and that new infrastructure should be developed timeously to provide potable water to all in South Africa.

2019 SAICE Aqualibrium Finals Photography. The competition saw regional winners from across South Africa and Eswatini battle it out by designing, building, and operating water distribution networks.

Following an elaborate tour of Grundfos’ sustainable intelligence hub and deliberation, teams congregated for the prize giving ceremony. In third place featured the team from St. Charles College Pietermaritzburg, who included Johan Rautenbach, Boaz Hansen and Caleb Reynard. Following close behind were Pieter Oosthuizen, Francois Roberts, Marthinus Nagel from Hoërskool Grens. For the first time in the competition’s history and placed in first place, were the learners; Sanele Shangase, Sibanisezwe Sangweni and Thembeka Ndlovu from the Inanda Newtown Comprehensive High School – a win these students will never forget.

Many of the teams were flown to Johannesburg and accommodated in a good hotel, an experience that these young students and their educators will cherish forever. For most, this is a first encounter with the ‘big city’.

AQUALIBRIUM strengthens government’s initiatives aimed at encouraging learners to take Mathematics and Science at school and to follow a career as a science or civil engineering practitioner. Only in this way can we assure that the quality of life of all South Africans will be better in future!

Industrial Photographer South Africa | Aggeneys Solar Facility USAID

As an industrial photographer in South Africa, we often pack our bags and fly to remote places like the Northern Cape via Johannesburg. Our mission – solar plant industrial photography of the Aggeneys solar farm.

Biotherm Energy, a Power Africa Partner (driven by USAID) developed the 40 MW solar PV power plant at Aggeneys.

Aggeneys (place of water) is a mining town approximately one hundred kilometers east of Carolusberg on the road between Springbok and Pofadder. The area is rich in copper, zinc, silver, and lead.

Remember the Volkswagen Microbus?

With the popularity of the Microbus came numerous nicknames from fans over the years. Some of its nicknames in its home country of Germany include Bully, Hippie-Van and Kleinbus. Other nicknames around the world include Rugbrod in Denmark, Vee-Dub in America and and Camping-Car in France.

Though its origins are unclear, the VW Microbus became an icon of the hippie movement of the late 1960s. Consequently, when the Grateful Dead lead singer Jerry Garcia passed away, Volkswagen released an advertisement in memorial of him.

A Dutch VW importer designed the VW Microbus in 1947. After some much needed changes, VW officially made it in 1950. The VW Microbus is the second vehicle ever created by Volkswagen. The classic Beetle being the first. In the first year of production, Volkswagen made over 9 500 vehicles. The vehicle’s popularity increased exponentially from there.Growing production more and more over the next two decades.

Volkswagen Beetle FActs

There are few vehicles ever built that are more iconic than the Volkswagen Beetle. Over 20 million Volkswagen Beetles were produced for 65 years in over 20 countries.

Did you know:

  • The Beetle was designed in 1925 by an 18-year-old Hungarian Student named Bela Barenyi – as a result, she’s recognized as designing the basic foundations of the Beetle
  • It Got Its Iconic Nickname from The New York Time
  • Beginning in 1938 and ending in 2003, the Beetle was in production for a whopping 65 years, therefore the longest a vehicle has been produced in history

Did you know | Rovos Rail History

A Wilbur Smith heroine with her own private railway coach, a man called Phil Acutt with a passion for trains and the presence of the Witbank Steam Railway in the coal-mining town where Rohan Vos ran his successful auto spares business, all played a part.

Several coaches were purchased and taken to the Society’s yards in Witbank to be rebuilt. One of them, Private Saloon 15063, is still in service and another, an engineer’s caboose, stood at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront for many years. She served as the marketing and reservations office. The complications of working with the South African Transport Services administration soon convinced Rohan to be self-sufficient where possible. As a result, he purchased a 1938 Class 19D locomotive from Lowenthal’s Scrap Metal in Johannesburg. It was rebuilt by Rovos Rail and named BIANCA, after one off Rohan Vos’ daughters.

Consisting of a locomotive and seven carriages, the train was launched on 29 April 1989. They set off with four paying passengers, friends and press, heading to the Eastern Transvaal. With a four-night Lowveld experience and in 1991 the Pretoria to Cape Town run, the business began to find direction. But, as any train operator will confirm, running a schedule is risky and nerve-wracking. To project consistency and reliability to agents and passengers, it’s imperative to run according to the advertised schedule. Of course, this wears rather thin when passenger loads are less than the number required to break even financially. Vos found  that one can lose considerably more money establishing a schedule.

A visit to the London World Travel Market, led to meeting tour operator Philip Morrell, owner of Jules Verne in London. They hatched a plan to run the train from Cape Town to Victoria Falls. The package was advertised in the Sunday Telegraph during late December. To Vos’s relief, he reported that sales were going extremely well and nearly four train loads had been booked.

Vos  purchased 38 redundant carriages from the South African Railways.

Armed with Les Pivnic’s book on dining cars, Rohan started the search for suitable coaches. An early target was the Jewish Guild Country Club in Johannesburg where three vandalised and dilapidated dining cars stood as part of an aborted restaurant venture. All three – KEI, NILE and MODDER – were hauled to Witbank and returned to the rails. In the years since then, family life has been inseparable from the business with Rovos Rail growing up alongside the Vos children. Family holidays always had another agenda, as they scoured the far ends of the country for coaches and locomotives to add to their collection.

Rovos Rail Engines

All the engines for Rovos Rail bare the names of the Vos children – Brenda, Bianca, Tiffany and Shaun – and nothing could be more appropriate as the family’s history and memories are so tightly interwoven with the Rovos Rail story of acquisition and expansion. On the 10th anniversary of Rovos Rail, the magnificently restored and rebuilt locomotive – 25NC 3484, which had been converted from coal-firing to oil – was christened MARJORIE by Rohan’s mother, Mrs Marjorie Vos.
