The National Science & Technology Forum (NSTF)-South32 Photos Johannesburg

The 21st annual National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF)-South32 Awards were held on the 27th of June 2019. The ‘Oscars of Science’ in South Africa was held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg. The NSTF-South32 Awards celebrates excellence across various fields of expertise. Fields include science, technology, innovation and engineering. The NSTF is a non-profit stakeholder body for all science, engineering and technology (SET) and innovation organisations in South Africa.

Awards

The Lifetime Achievement Award

Prof. Robin Crewe received the Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognises the phenomenal work he has done on social insects, especially on honeybees. The award also celebrates the extensive work he has put into uplifting the scientific community. Prof. Crewe has been the dean of natural science at two universities. He has also served as vice-principal for research and postgraduate studies at the University of Pretoria.

NSTF Brilliants Programme

The NSTF Brilliants Programme recognises 18 first year students studying in the science, medicine and engineering fields. Two students (one male and one female) are chosen from each of the 9 provinces. These students must have received top marks in mathematics and physical science in the National Senior Certificate Examinations (grade 12) of the previous year. They are identified by the Provincial Education Departments, and selected by the NSTF. Further reading: here.

Event photography Johannesburg. Monsoon Photography covered the South Africa Digital Summit for McKinsey & Company. The conference was held at the prestigious five star graded The Forum in Bryanston, Gauteng.

Tawanda Sibanda, Digital McKinsey Partner welcomed guests. Agenda included ‘Disruptive Technology – the emergence of the fully automatic business’ by John Straw, Serial Technology Entrepreneur. Speakers included Pieter de Villiers, Co-founder and CEO, Clickatell as well as Bryan Nelson, Google Sector Lead of Finance Retail and Travel.

Delegates attended breakout sessions covering topics such as Advanced Analytics, Building Ecosystems in Africa, Digital Marketing and Digital Business Building.

Digital is driving major changes in how companies set and execute strategy.

“John Straw is a serial technology entrepreneur and digital veteran with 33 years of experience in IT and marketing. He has five start-ups and five exits behind him. He was the Chair of Thomas Cook’s Digital Advisory Board to 2016. Authored a book on disruptive technology, iDisrupted, and is an active VC in early stage start-ups.”

When did digital marketing start?

Nobody expected Newsweek to go totally digital in its production. The digital age as we now know it, began with the Internet and the Web 1.0 platforms of the early 1990s. Do you remember the static world in which users could get the information they were seeking without being able to share it on the web? Interaction on the web consequently did not exist. Hence the only activity was reading of content. The first clickable banner ad launched In 1993. In fact, as a result 1994 Hotwired began to purchase huge numbers of banner ads. Of course resulting in the fist step towards the digital marketing age.

Furthermore, new technology entered into the digital marketplace after 1994. Google being founded in 1998. Blogger followed in 1999. About this time social networking sites began to be birthed and Blackberry launch their own mobile email program. MySpace is one of the first social sites to arrive on the social scene.

Deloitte FUELMilestone Africa 2018

Monsoon Photography had the privilege of shooting the Deloitte FUELMilestone Africa conference for the second time. This prestigious event has been hosted in Africa twice – aiding new senior consultants in their journey ahead, with the help of seasoned coaches and Deloitte partners and management from across the globe.

This year we traveled to the beautiful Champagne Sports Resort, overlooking the magical Drakensberg. The perfect place for work and play. Five days of fresh air, magnificent mountain views, great food, lost of entertainment and interesting workshops.

The Drakensberg Boys Choir, who reside in the nearby Winterton, entertained the delegates on the first night’s Gala event. Twenty boys enrolled in the first year of the school’s existence in 1967. Today, they travel the world and have produced many well-knows names in the music and acting world.

Drum Cafe facilitated a drumming session for the Deloitte delegates who thoroughly enjoyed the interactive team building session. The American delegates, especially, had a their first hands-on taste of African music. “Drumming is a universal expression that transcends all boundaries: personal, organizational or cultural. Drum Cafe teaches staff to increase productivity and efficiency through better team work. This unifying experience creates the perfect platform for teams to experience the power of all working together to achieve a common objective.”
