Tawanda Sibanda, Digital McKinsey Partner welcomed guests. Agenda included ‘Disruptive Technology – the emergence of the fully automatic business’ by John Straw, Serial Technology Entrepreneur. Speakers included Pieter de Villiers, Co-founder and CEO, Clickatell as well as Bryan Nelson, Google Sector Lead of Finance Retail and Travel.

Delegates attended breakout sessions covering topics such as Advanced Analytics, Building Ecosystems in Africa, Digital Marketing and Digital Business Building.

Digital is driving major changes in how companies set and execute strategy.

When did digital marketing start?

Nobody expected Newsweek to go totally digital in its production. The digital age as we now know it, began with the Internet and the Web 1.0 platforms of the early 1990s. Do you remember the static world in which users could get the information they were seeking without being able to share it on the web? Interaction on the web consequently did not exist. Hence the only activity was reading of content. The first clickable banner ad launched In 1993. In fact, as a result 1994 Hotwired began to purchase huge numbers of banner ads. Of course resulting in the fist step towards the digital marketing age.

Furthermore, new technology entered into the digital marketplace after 1994. Google being founded in 1998. Blogger followed in 1999. About this time social networking sites began to be birthed and Blackberry launch their own mobile email program. MySpace is one of the first social sites to arrive on the social scene.
